Dongzhi Festival

Summary

The Dongzhi Festival is known as Winter Solstice Festival. It is a traditional Chinese festival that mainland China and other regions in east Asia commonly celebrate. Family members will reunite and enjoy a warm and delicious meal together. Chinese ancestors believe Yin would change into Yang as the daylight hours get longer after the winter solstice. Furthermore, ancient Chinese medicine suggests more positive energy will appear. In short, the celebration marks the beginning of energy recharge.

Food and Nutrition

Traditionally, families make and eat tangyuan, dumplings, or wontons, which symbolize union. Asian people usually prepare nutritional ingredients to cook their festival meals. For instance, sweet fillings of tangyuan may contain red beans, black sesame, and crushed peanuts. Consuming these components is believed to help people keep warm during the cold winter.
